Hi all,
Just saw this for the first time.
Rory quite clearly states the Torch (unreleased, 'scrapped' album) album was done in the years prior to Defender. I always thought Torsch was a working title for what became the Notes from San Francisco CD - so what became PhotoFinish.
This means, I guess, at least another unreleased cache of different versions/unheard songs. Or was it all , literally, thrown out?
Anyone know?

I think that "Torch" is in fact what was later released as "Notes", and that Rory was frustrated at first how what became "Defender" was progressing but righted the ship in the end. I don't think there was a third album that was scrapped or binned.

That's what I thought - but this interview is 1988. So a full decade after NFSF was recorded.
As the San Fran sessions became Photofinish, he then recorded Top Priority soon after.
Then the Stagestruck tour & live album.
This interview does seem to outline the early/mid 80's recording hiatus - and Rory says pretty clearly it was because Torch got recorded, then scrapped just before Defender.

Hi folksdeejay and welcome to the new Rory forum. That's an interview I've seen before but is still refreshing to see again and with Rory quite upbeat about his future in the music business in 1988 Yes I see it that way also that he did scrap another album "Torch" which would have been after Jinx early to mid 80's. Doing the same for Torch as NFSF and using some of the songs and revamping them as per Photo Finish with the Defender album? I'll ask Daniel Gallagher about this one.

Hello to all - the way I remember from different posts/interviews was that when he scrapped the San Francisco album (threw it in the bin), he then went to the small studio in Germany and recorded some of the tracks there that became Photo Finish. Then when Daniel Gallagher was rereleasing his material, they made what was to become Notes From San Francisco. In this video from 1988, Rory does look so well and optimistic. Good to see - bless his memory.

Hello, So I did some digging and see that there were 2 albums by Rory that were scrapped. The first one was the "San Francisco" recordings which he scrapped and then went on to make Photofinish at a small studio in Germany with some of the tracks. Then he made "Torch" which he scrapped and then went on to make Defender. Daniel Gallagher took the San Francisco recording and made Notes From San Francisco as a reissue. So glad I did the digging because up until now I thought there was only one scrapped album. Rory was indeed a perfectionist.

Read, guitar magazine from 1987 which I still have and bought when it came out.. Rory did songs that would have become Torch.. But we're re recorded for defender.. The Paul Jones blues show in April 1986..Rory did an hour long special speaking about it.. And recorded 3 songs live that were played on the show.. One being Off the handle.. They also played Continental Op.. This was over a full year before Defender came out (July 1987)..

So its probably getting on for 40 years since the studion album sessions (Torch) after Stagestruck / Jinx releases - but before Defender got recorded and released. Did this ever get clarified by the family, or label etc?
