Barry (Sinnerboy) Barnes discovered Rory Gallagher after going to Rare Records in his native Manchester in 1969 to purchase the latest Led Zeppelin. It was sold out. So he bought a record by Gallagher’s band Taste instead. Smitten with the Cork man’s playing, he made sure he was in the crowd when Taste headlined Manchester’s Free Trade Hall several weeks later... “I walked in and was really disappointed,” he says. “Instead of the wall of amps I was used to there was just this one little Vox amp on a kitchen chair. And I thought, ‘oh no, I’m not going to like this’. It’s not going to be like Hendrix’. And of course Rory ran on, plugged his guitar into that box and blew my brains out.” In Cork this week, Sinnerboy won’t be trying to recreate the 1987 concert note for note. They see the evening as a celebration of Gallagher and his legacy rather than as an attempt to reprise his music. “It’s about the spirit of it. We try to recreate the atmosphere,” says Barnes. “Nobody can play guitar like Rory. We want to try and recreate the memories. The thing I’ve always said about Sinnerboy is that it’s not a band on stage and an audience watching. It’s a group of Rory fans getting together. It’s a celebration. It just so happens that some of us have learned how to play the songs and some of us are in the audience. It doesn’t matter. We’re all family.”

Just heard this news on FB.
Sorry to hear this. Enjoy your retirement Barry and the band. Thankyou so much for carrying on Rorys music legacy and flame for last 20 odd years or so. You did Rory proud and his fans and Sinnerboy fans. Will miss you guys. Hope we can still see you all the same at Cork Rocks For Rory Festival. It won't be the same without you guys. Thankyou to Barry, Bri, John Brutal and all the other Sinnerboy band members over the years. I first met Barry and the band in Ruslip, London in 2012. Saw them perform in Edinburgh, Ballyshannon and Cork, Macroom Ireland. Wonderful everytime. Felt Rory's energy everywhere and the love for Rory and Sinnerboy. I have so many wonderful memories.Thankyou again for bringing Rory's music to the next generation. God bless. Rock On For Rory!!! Ger loved you guys and so do we. Subrata and Susie.xxxx I guess the final Sinnerboy concert at the Cork Opera House, Cork, Ireland this year 2021 (to recreate Rory's 1987 historic Cork Opera House concert) is a fitting way for Sinnerboy to take the final bow. What a hiatus. Thankyou for the guitar tips along the way. God Bless You All. Subrata & Susie.xxx

Yes Suby and as I told Cynthia (Moonchild) on messenger I heard this sad news earlier today from Mrs Jay who is admin for Sinnerboy (Facebook pages) and has been their Secret Agent / secretary for the passed few years. I'm in total shock to be honest. As I class Barry (Sinnerboy) as a real buddy of mine and he always told me that he would never stop performing Rory's music and that they would have to carry him off stage in a box for that to happen. I've just been talking to the organiser of the Rory Tribute in Holland about this sad /shock news and he says the same and he can't believe this either that Barry (Sinnerboy) is retiring

I am saddened Jay Jay and Cynthia. We could not go to Cork either in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic. Susie and I mainly go for Sinnerboy gigs and Rory of course. We made good friends in Cork and became a part of the Rory Gallagher family of musicians, friends and fans. I have been slowly going to literature events again and on my calendar I had scribbled in Cork 2022. I am sure Susie and I will go to both the International Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon again and Cork Rocks For Rory Festival again. It won't be the same without Barry and the boys. :0'(. I had a dream of Rory the night before Sinnerboy performed at Cork Opera House and a dream last night of Rory & then I get the news Sinnerboy have retired. But I wish Barry and the guys well. I hope they enjoy their retirement I know its not easy to do touring. In 2013 Susie and I travelled in Ireland and did our own Rory Gallagher pilgrimage. I documented that on the RG old forum. I met Susie in the summer, in Stanmore, London and her mum put together all these photos that Susie took of our RG pilgrimage of 2013 on CD. It was such a beautiful gesture and I was looking at it. I thanked Susie and her mum. Wonderful memRORYS. My mum is a fan of Rory too. I think our parents are chuffed we love their era of music. I hope in time they love 90s music as well. BTW we covered Ireland in one week and was really tired. So I understand for Rory and Sinnerboy touring can be gruelling, but the joy they get in doing the concerts etc and getting the love, gratitude and applause from the fans makes it all worth it. Anyway we have to Rory On. One door closes and another opens. That is what life has taught me and this pandemic has changed me. We will continue to ROCK ON FOR RORY!!! 🤘. RG FOREVER!!! Sinnerboy ( Barry and guys) you did Rory proud. Thankyou from the bottom of our hearts 💕💞. Subrata.xx Hope everyone is well. Stay Safe.

Jay Jay always said that Sinner Boy was his favourite tribute band and I was so looking forward to seeing them at Ballyshannon and/or Cork. So sad to hear they had decided to retire. Sad for their fans but I know they have carried the torch for Rory for many years. All the best in their retirement and I hope to see some of you at a Rory Festival in the future. Best wishes from Toronto, Canada. HI Galwaygirl as with Rory's songs I've never said what is my favourite song. As with the RG tribute bands the same applies. I said in the OP of this thread Sinnerboy are still the best around. I've been Manager / Secret Agent to other Rory G Tribute bands or related Rory bands for years since the Rory Fest in Ballyshannon first started at the beginning of the 21st century. These bands didn't have the longevity and dedication that Barry / Sinnerboy have shown over the past 25 years. Imho Barry (Sinnerboy) had the advantage over all these other younger tribute bands. Firstly because he's older and saw Rory Live many times and studied he's guitar techniques diligently. Yet also Barry will admit himself he's not as handsome and as naturally talented also not having the long flowing hair that Rory had and his great stage presence. As I heard Barry say about comparing himself to Rory once. " I'm like a pimple on Rory backside compared to all of Rory's talents" Yet Barry did have excellent playing and stage presence and facial expressions and personality to make up for this somewhat I believe. He did carry the torch for Rory's music and legacy for over a quarter of a century and we do have to thank him and Sinnerboy so much for everything he did after Rory sad passing in 1995. Barry in fact led the way as a Rory Fan and began the very first Rory Tribute night in Manchester in 1996. I still " Can't Believe It's True " that Barry and Sinnerboy are calling it a day
